North Star Academy Charter School of Newark Reviews

My son has attended this school since 5th grade. He will soon be in the 8th. He has received an invaluable education and improved character. The administration and staff are consistent with their practices and high expectations. The parent meetings are packed-more than I expected for free education. Lastly, the teacher availability and their feedback are exceptional.

I am a parent of NSA first kindegarden class. I am so pleased with my daughter's progress. I love the way that the children are being taught. They know how to read very well. I recommend this school to anyone that values their child education.

North Star Academy is an excellent school in many ways. It can also be a very frustrating school. Academically, they are sound and have used many effective strategies to educate my child. I am quite pleased with the quality of education that my child has received in the years spent at NSA. The teachers are well qualified as well as the administration. There are a few areas that require improvement. #1 There is NO PTO. I believe that parents should be real partners in educating their children. Parent Teacher Organizations serve this purpose. #2 I believe that students should receive homework but it should not keep them up until 1AM when they have to go to school the next morning. #3 Students should not be held for detention until night hours. Students take the bus and it is not safe. In spite of these things, I do recommend North Star.

North Star is definitely a 10! I am a former student and I can honestly say that North Star strives for excellence. Their tight-knit community focuses on building strong families through parental/family involvement and a strong academic curriculum. The school takes urban children away from their violent settings and shows them things they would never see on their own, let alone in any other public school. At North Star, students are allowed to set goals for themselves without ever settling for less. There is no social promotion like ordinary schools because the faculty actually cares about the students. I believe Newark would be a much better place if all other public schools were eliminated and replaced by schools like North Star. A school can t just attach academy at the end of its name and really stand for something. It requires the strong, determined faculty that North Star also possesses. If North Star had a college I would be there!!!

I am a student at North Star Academy and believes that they are very strict but is very high in education.

North Star is the best School I ever attened. This my first year atteneding North Star, and I'm having The time of my life. The teachers are wonderful they really help you get through the lesson. They all their times trying to help you get a better education.

NSA, wow. Where do I begin. I truly love this school. My son is now an 8th grader. I can remember lottery night, (sitting on pins and needles) with my fingers crossed, praying his name was called. Mr. V and his Staff is wonderful, always making themselves available to the students if they require extra help, etc. Alot of schools at 3:05pm, Teachers they are knocking the students down, trying to get out the building, not at NSA. Teacher's are always here late, everyday. They want of children to succeed in life. Parents I know sometimes things can get alittle crazy, we see it to be too much, but at the end of the day,it's worth it for the education. Proud 8th Grade parent

This is our son's 2nd year at NSA and he is in the 6th grade. We were blown away at his level of self-motivation and commitment in the new school year. He independently displayed these qualities as a result of successfully completing the 5th grade at NSA. For us, NSA is a success for our son; because we believe in their mission and it is in line with our family values. To the families that are new to the 2007-2008 NSA family stay the course and you will reap the benefits and rewards of having a child with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, wisdom, a greater sense of community and the greatest self-pride imaginable. Tanya & Osmund Brinkley, Proud Parents of Reginald D. Bullard 6th Grade Ujima Team

I am a new parent with NSA and I can say that it is a Great school with Great teachers. The Staff is excellent as well. I do go through a lot with the homework given and the detentions which sometimes appear to be unfair but I can see the changes in My son. He cries if he gets detention. I think this is what gets him down about the school. He is also having trouble with a few classes but I hope once I speak to the teachers we can work together to solve this issue. Otherwise, I truly would tell any parent to send there child to this school. It is strick, with a lot of dicipline that requires adjustment from everyone. I hope once we are done with the growing pains everything will smooth itself out. A parent of a 5th grader.

I am extremely proud of my son and he has only attended North Star a few weeks. I can tell an improvement in is attitued regarding school work as well as home work. My son is enthusiastic and competitive again I have not experienced this with him since he was in the 1st grade. I love every thing about this school and I can't recommend it enough to all my family and friends. To the staff I say keep up the great work.

The academic program is rigorous. The students are expected to give 110%. The discipline factor will take some getting use to for new students. There are detentions and major detentions that are taken very seriously. There is not much offered in the way of extracurricular activities such as art and music. However the students do perform in musical productions twice a year. The parent involvement is encouraged and usually there is a great turn-out of parents that support the school and the programs.

North Star Academy School is excellant. They are very organized when it comes to my child's education. The children have assessments every 3 months so you can see your child's weakness and strengths; and what they need help in. This year, they have even extended school to 4pm. They take a lot of time with the parents to explain to us about our children's education. This school is also a part of the community and they stress that on a daily basics. I may not know much about other charter schools, but I do know about North Star Academy. North Star Academy doors are always open, you need to visit. Keep up the good work North Star Academy. A proud parent. V. White

Since comming to North Star, I have matured and my grades have improved. North Star's academic program is a very good one and i thank North Star for my excitement to learn new things and keep my mind focused on school.
