Institute for Collaborative Education Reviews

My granddaugher started the 8th grade at ICE this year. She says it's the best yr of her life because of ICE! It's academically challenging & fun..

My son, Dylan Greenberg, is a 7th grader at I.C.E. These are his words: I'm voting for I.C.E. not just because it is my school, but for many other reasons as well. Compared to more traditional schools, I.C.E. is extremely unique. I.C.E. is not trying to fit me into a mold of basic learning that you get in every other school. It's classes are very interactive. In all my classes we get to do activities related to what we're learning. Our science class is great, because we get to do all of our science experiments ourselves. Our electives are excellent. All of my friends look forward to elective on every day that we have it. I do, as well. My elective is economics. The economics class gets to learn about advertising and marketing, as well as how our economy is worsening, and how it can get better. I really like filmmaking, and I volunteered to make a movie for economics and the teacher let me do that as my project. In humanities, we are reading Animal Farm. Instead of just reading it and taking notes, we're writing fictional propaganda for some of the characters. Town Meeting is fun. I get to see things other people made and it's interesting. I feel like I'm really included in the school.

All the schools I researched in NYC for my kids to attend,I.C.E. has the best representation preparing kids for future. Energetic, positive, dedicated teachers!! Teachers have great communication with kids. It is wonderful school.

The Teachers. ICE is a tiny school barely 400 kids in grades 6-12, but they have made a commitment to small class size. In order to keep classes small the teachers do double and triple duty not only teaching expert and interesting classes and tutoring, they head clubs and sports, and help with administrative tasks. Many leave school well into the evening. They are a truly dedicated bunch.

It is a fantastic school with small classes, dedicated teachers, a diverse student body and an amazing principal. Go ICE!

Because my son, who hated school, never hated to go to I.C.E. and learn, and because of the founder and principal, John Pettinato, who is a miracle worker!

caring and attentive to the individual needs/capabilities of each student

ICE is like no other public school. The teachers know each student academically, socially and emotionally. The support and caring for each other, and for the entire family, at the school is amazing.

It's an always galvanizing combination of Sesame St (PG-13 edition) and Welcome Back Kotter. It's run on well placed rubberbands, salvaged batteries, the mighty, mighty efforts of a small, amazing staff, the harnessed energy of 400 some NYC public school kids, and occasional pennies offered up by cash-strapped parents. My seventh grader is reading Hobbes and Rosseau...my husband didn't read them 'til college...I'm not sure I read them at all!

ICE has many wonderful attributes. One is that both my children LOVE to go to school. That could not be said for their elementary school. The humanities and science program are strong, as is the music department. Creativity is cherished in all subject areas and the school does do not teach to the test. Therefore, my children are learning how to learn and enjoying the process. They are learning a lot about whatever subject they tackle. And I should not forget to mention the wonderful, dedicated teachers who inspire them to reach their potential.

amazingly dedicated and energetic teachers do a great job of harnessing student energy (and there is a lot of it). despite the small student body, each child seems able to find their niche and to find acceptance and support from all the others - a message of compassion that comes from the top down. my daughter and i are both excited about the curriculum, which promotes critical thinking every step of the way. and she continues to flourish in math and science!

The principle and the teachers really love our kids! My son has never loved a school or teachers as much as he does at ICE. He has blossomed since we moved here from australia and is taking school and learning much more seriously now. The teachers at ICE create a fun and exciting learning environment for the children. But not only do the teachers enjoy what they are doing (and it shows) but they are there to provide support for the kids after school every single day and evening. Thank you ICE! We think you are great!

Small classes, enthusiastic teachers who know how to instill a love for learning. The kids show improvement in self esteem, confidence and maturity directly related to how they are treated and respected by their teachers. My son is flourishing in this environment and showing a renewed sense of self and joy I haven't seen in him since the schools started teaching to tests. At ICE they teach learning and life lessons that are vital to his future.

Rich in community spirit and a tremendous respect for the individual made possible by small class sizes and extremely dedicated teachers. My daughter is in her 7th year at ICE. It is her home away from home--a rigorously academic and nurturing place where she has transformed from a child to a young adult ready for college and beyond.

The school urges students to be independent thinkers. Lots of creative challenges in every subject. The great sense of community urges students to take risks and express freely. At the same time they are supportive of others who may have differences. My son loves to go to school everyday! The teachers are so caring and passionate.

I think the education our children receive prepares them for the real world, not just passing tests

The school is a member for The Coalition of Essential Schools. It is community of students, parents, teachers, administrators and partners in the community working together to provide a truly 'collaborative' education for NYC students.

I love this school. It always keeps me connected to my childs work. The teachers are amazing and are easy to get ahold of when you need them, especially Imani Matthews. My child loves this school and its curriculum and this is one of the best schools shes gone to.

An innovative and creative school. Small class sizes and teachers and administration that are dedicated to the educating the whole student. Students learn through project work, not being drilled to take tests.

Dedicated & creative staff invest in our children's success. They take interest in each individual and help them demonstrate their knowledge and talents through far more meaningful endeavors than test-taking.

A quirky, supportive atmosphere with quirky, supportive, overly intelligent teachers.

It brings the best in the children in a non-competitive way. The teachers are creative and original and the kids develop the same way. They are all very proud of their school and helpful of their schoolmates.

passionate teachers and staff dedicated to bringing the most and best out of all their students and to making them great thinkers while respecting their personalities and individualities.

Unlike many schools, ICE is run for the children, not for the staff or administration. My son, who hated his traditional elementary school, now loves to go to school.

There is a collegiate atmosphere at the school that is hard to come by. The teachers make their classes interesting and relevant. The students work hard but have fun too.

when we were looking for a middle school for my son, we went on a tour at ICE. i met an 11th grader who was working at school, after the school day. i asked him what he thought of ICE and he said it was the best school he had ever been to and he wished he had had all his school years there. (he had transfered from another school in 10th grade) that was it for me... my son had the most wonderful teachers. the principal, John is a wonderful caring guy, who greets all his students each morning. its like being part of a big family. terrific school.

ICE is the best school around the Lower East Side. The teachers are friendly and the environment is clean and nice. If you are just going to the school you will feel right at home and make some friends right away.

ICE has the most committed group of teachers I have ever seen. It offers a challenging, project-based curriculum -- the literture and social studies curricula are organized around broad themes. Instead of 'getting through' material by reading chapters in a textbook filled with facts, students take a question and study it deeply from various angles. ICE does not give standard A,B,C,D,F grades. Itstead, teachers report on whether students 'met standards' or not. The school year is divided into four cycles, at the end of which students are assessed. Each cycle culminates in a project which is designed to pull together everything that the student has learned during that cycle. The end-of-year project in each subject area is extensive and quite a challenge. Class size is low; the tradeoff is that there are few extras and the school often runs out of basic supplies like paper. 100% of ICE's graduates go to college.
