Jersey City, New
Jersey was originally home to the Van Vorst family in 1804. Also in that year,
Robert Fulton created a shipyard to sail “The Jersey” to New York. In 1827, the
Joseph Dixon Crucible Company flourished. In 1829, the Watch became Jersey
City’s police force. Morris Canal was completed in 1836. Dudley Gregory became
Jersey City’s first mayor in 1838.
In 1847, “The
Hibernia” docked in Jersey City, New Jersey. The paid fire department began in
1871. William L. Dickinson became the first Superintendent of Schools in 1872.
Washington and Lafayette ate under the Apple Tree House during the American
Revolution. In 1807, Marquis De Lafayette was entertained by Colonel Richare
Varick in Prospect Hall.
